ASTANA, Kazakhstan, June 27. Kazakhstan and Russia plan to sign an intergovernmental agreement on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan by the end of 2025, Trend reports.
Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency of Kazakhstan Almassadam Satkaliyev said the agreement is currently under preparation and will outline key terms of cooperation with the Russian state corporation Rosatom.
Speaking to journalists following a joint session of the Parliament’s chambers, Satkaliyev noted that the estimated cost of the NPP will be based on a feasibility study, but global benchmarks suggest it will be no less than $14 billion.
He added that the preferential loan terms for the project will be negotiated between the finance ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia, as the project is expected to be financed through a government loan. The anticipated construction timeline is seven years from the start of work at the site.
Earlier, Kazakhstan and Russia signed preliminary documents outlining the preparation and implementation phases of the NPP project.
