BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 3. Iran has inaugurated the “Sahand” combined-cycle power plant in the country’s northwestern East Azerbaijan Province, Trend reports via the country's Ministry of Energy.
The F class facility was officially commissioned on November 3 as part of a nationwide initiative to improve electricity generation and promote renewable energy development. The ceremony, held via video conference, was attended by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Minister of Energy Abbas Aliabadi, and other senior officials.
The Sahand power plant has a total generation capacity of 451 megawatts, consisting of a 307-megawatt gas unit and a 144-megawatt steam unit. The gas unit has now entered operation, while construction of the steam unit continues. Overall, about 3.47 trillion rials (about $6.06 million) and €109 million were invested in the project.
Located on a 32-hectare site, the plant aims to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. Once fully operational, it is expected to significantly improve power generation in Iran’s northwestern region and help mitigate electricity shortages.
The launch coincides with a broader energy initiative in Iran, which includes the completion and commissioning of power projects across the country worth roughly 166 trillion rials (around $289 million).
