The economically active population in Azerbaijan has reached 5.2 million people as of May 1, 2020, of which 4.9 million people account for the employed, Trend reports referring to Azerbaijan’s State Statistical Committee.
The number of hired employees in the country was 1.65 million people as of May 1, 2020, including 911,700 people that worked in the public sector of economy, 734,400 people in the private sector. The number of employees in the oil sector amounted to 33,700 people, in the non-oil sector - 1.61 million people.
Some 23.8 percent of employees were engaged in the production sector, 7.5 percent of them in construction sector, 7.4 percent in processing sector, 3.3 percent in agriculture, forestry and fish productiong sector, 2 percent - in the mining industry, 1.8 percent - in the production, distribution and supply of electricity, gas and steam, 1.8 percent - in the field of water supply, waste treatment and recycling.
Some 20.3 percent of those employed in the service sector were engaged in the field of education, 17.9 percent - in trade, car repair sector, 8.2 percent - medical and social services, 6.9 percent - public administration and social provision, 4.6 percent - transport and storage facilities, 4.1 percent - in the provision of administrative and auxiliary services.
Besides, 3.5 percent of those employed in the services sector were engaged in the field of professional, scientific and technical activities, 3.4 percent - in the fields of recreation, entertainment and art, 1.8 percent - financial and insurance activities, 1.7 percent - in communication and information sphere, 1.7 percent - in the field of tourist accommodation and catering, and 1 percent - in the area of real estate operations.
By the end of 1Q2020, the number of foreigners and stateless persons with valid work permits issued for paid employment in the country and extended for a specified period amounted to 1,300 people.
Of these, 30.5 percent were engaged in construction, 19.5 percent in mining, 10.2 percent in manufacturing, 9.6 percent in tourist accommodation and catering, 6.8 percent in trade and vehicle repair, 3.4 percent had work permits for medical and social services, 2.5 percent for education and 17.5 percent for other areas.
