Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has constructed two new barriers at the Black Sea oil terminal in Kulevi, Georgia, to improve safety in navigation, the terminal’s website said Oct. 31.
One of the most significant priorities of the Black Sea Terminal is to protect its territory and infrastructure from hurricanes and floods, reads the message.
“For this purpose, the terminal experts constantly monitor the coastline’s state. They conduct geodesic surveys of the bank each month and after each sea level rise or storm when the wind speed reaches a certain level. They also analyze changes in the shoreline and predict future geomorphological processes. On the basis of the analyzed data, specialists develop and take appropriate measures to protect the coastline,” the message says.
It was noted that the terminal is taking measures to strengthen its hydraulic facilities.
“In October, two barriers were built at berth #1 in the southern part of the entrance channel in order to improve the safety of navigation within the port of Kulevi,” reads the message.
The terminal in Georgia's Kulevi was commissioned in May 2008 and the oil transhipment started in June of the same year. The total capacity of the terminal is 10 million tons of bulk-oil cargo per year, three million tons of oil, three million tons of diesel fuel and four million tons of fuel oil.
