Demand for the alcohol sharply increased in Azerbaijan due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, and given this tendency, by the recommendation of the head of state, the production of isopropyl alcohol has been restored at the Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant of Azerikimya PU owned by State Oil Company of Azerbaijan SOCAR, Trend reports citing SOCAR.
Launching of the production was planned after the completion of the reconstruction of the EP-300 installation.
“The decision on restoring the production of isopropyl alcohol, which takes its place in the chain of final products in the processing of Azerikimya PU, is associated with a sharp increase in the demand for alcohol in local and foreign markets. After uninterrupted repair and restoration work carried out at the installation, technical capacities were commissioned on April 5, departments for the production of isopropyl alcohol were commissioned on April 11, and the production of the final product was immediately started,” said the message.
“In turn, this will lead, on the one hand, to a sharp decrease in dependence on imports of isopropyl alcohol, and on the other, to an increase in the export of the product to world markets," the company added.
"The production of isopropyl alcohol at the enterprise proceeds in two stages. At the first stage, technical alcohol is produced. At the second stage, technical alcohol is purified and converted into the isopropyl alcohol. The daily production volume of products made from isopropyl alcohol at the Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant is about 60 tons," said the report.
This alcohol is used in a number of areas besides medicine - the automotive industry, the chemical industry, pharmacology, energy, and others.
The isopropyl alcohol surpasses ethyl alcohol in disinfection, and serves as a raw material for universal cleaners. It is also used for production of medical antimicrobial paper towels.
