Iran, Russia, Georgia and Armenia have reached an initial agreement for synchronizing their power grid, a senior Iranian official has said.
Iranian Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian has said that completing the North-South Corridor will contribute to organizing a regional electricity market, Fars news agency reported.
He further predicted that the power grids of the four countries will be connected in 2018.
Chitchian made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting between Iran, Russia, Georgia, Armenia discussing North-South corridor in Yerevan.
Tehran has already announced that the most important precondition for materializing the plan is to synchronize the grids of Iran and Armenia.
Last year Iranian media reported that Tehran and Yerevan signed an agreement for the construction of a power transmission line that will enable them to exchange more electricity.
Iran had agreed to provide €83 million of the total €107.9 million needed to build the power line.
The existing electricity transmission lines between Iran and Armenia are capable of transmitting 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This will increase to 1,000 MW once the third transmission line has been established.
