The Internet transit capacity of the Islamic Republic has increased by 50 percent in recent months, Majid Mirzaei, financial director of the state-run Telecommunications Infrastructure Company of Iran (TIC), said.
In line with implementation of the Sixth Development Plan (2017-2022), the TIC has signed a contract to sell 300 gigabit per second (Gb/s) of Internet transit in north-south corridor, Mirzaei said, the press office of the ICT ministry announced.
At the moment 110 Gb/s of the contract is activated, he said.
The country’s international data transit capacity will increase by 1.5 times from the current level by implementing the deal, the official added.
Iran's international data transit capacity should increase to 30 terabit per second (tb/s) by 2022, under the Sixth Development Plan.
Based on the Sixth Plan, reforms in the structure of Telecommunication Infrastructure Center and establishment of the international data transition firm have been placed on the ministry's agenda.
Iran is planning to further develop its infrastructure in order to become an internet transit hub between the east and west.
Data access speed should increase to 24 megabyte per second (mb/s) to help the country rank third in the Middle East in the field.
The Sixth Plan also envisaged an increase in the country's bandwidth capacity and development of web content, electronic services and communication network coverage.
Iran’s internet bandwidth saw a huge growth from 81.68 gigabit per second to 995 gigabit per second since President Hassan Rouhani’s administration took office in 2013.
