BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 7. Freight transportation via the Astara railway in northern Iran climbed by 58 percent during the six months of the current Iranian year (from March 21 through September 22, 2025) compared to the same period last year (from March 20 through September 21, 2024), the head of the Astara customs department, Nadir Ansarian, told local media, Trend reports.
According to him, in the reporting timeframe, 267,000 tons of cargo were transported via the above railway.
Ansarian noted that the cargo was transported in 4,551 freight cars.
Following the agreement reached between the governments of Azerbaijan and Iran, the construction of the Astara terminal began in 2017.
The terminal is located in Astara, Iran, 1.4 km from the Azerbaijani-Iranian border. The territory of the terminal, which is being built by ADY, was leased to Azerbaijan by the Iranian government for 25 years.
The Astara terminal will ensure an increase in cargo transportation volumes and prompt implementation of operations along the North-South international transport corridor.
