South Sudanese armed forces shot down a United Nations helicopter, killing all four crew members on board, the UN said Friday.

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said an investigation was launched to establish the circumstances under which the craft was shot down near Likuangole, in the eastern region of Jonglei, dpa reported.

The helicopter was on a reconnaissance flight.

"Initial reports indicate that the aircraft crashed and burned," the mission said, adding that it learned from the South Sudanese government that the armed forces were responsible.
