BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 16. Azerbaijan’s railway sector transported over 5.7 million tons of freight and 2.9 million passengers from January through April 2025
Data obtained by Trend from the State Statistical Committee indicates that freight transport by rail decreased by 4.3 percent compared to the same period last year, while passenger transport saw a significant increase of 16.1 percent.
Overall, cargo and passenger transportation from January through April 2025 grew by 3.0 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Economic entities in the transport sector moved a total of 76.1 million tons of cargo.
Of this volume, 3.9 percent was transported by sea, 7.5 percent by rail, 0.2 percent by air, 59.2 percent by road, and 29.2 percent via pipelines. The volume of cargo transported by vehicles in the non-state sector increased by 4.4 percent, with this sector accounting for 78.4 percent of the total cargo transported.
Meanwhile, transport operators provided services to 659.6 million passengers in the January-April period. Road transport carried 88.3 percent of these passengers, the metro accounted for 11.1 percent, and the remainder traveled by other modes of transport.
