Russia and Turkmenistan are discussing matters of logistic cooperation and creating conditions for increasing bilateral and transit traffic in the Caspian region by making use of the infrastructure of both countries, Trend reports referring to the press service of the Ministry of Transport of Russia.
In connection with this, a meeting was held in Moscow between the Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation – Head of the Federal Marine and River Transport Agency (Rosmorrechflot) Yuri Tsvetkov, and the director of the international Turkmenbashi seaport and deputy head of the “Turkmendenizderyayollary” (Turkmen Sea and River Transportation) Agency Annadurdy Kosayev.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of Russian and Turkmen ports, logistics and leasing companies, and sales representatives of the two countries.
The parties are negotiating the resumption of the movement of train and car ferries between Turkmenbashi and Makhachkala. In particular, the Turkmen freight forwarding companies are interested in transporting their cargoes along the route Port Turkmenbashi - Port Makhachkala - railway of the Russian Federation - Russian ports on the Black Sea.
The new port in Turkmenbashi, commissioned in 2018, is intended to become an important link in maritime transport, creating the most favorable conditions for access to the Black Sea region, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, allowing a significant reduction in distance and time for large-scale freight traffic.
The annual throughput of the port of Turkmenbashi is 17-18 million tons. Together with the previously operating port, this figure adds up to 25-26 million tons. The international ferry and passenger port will be able to serve 300,000 passengers and 75,000 trailers per year. The average annual capacity of the container terminal is 400,000 TEU. The cost of the project implemented by Turkey’s Gap Insaat exceeds $1.5 billion.
