BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 23. Iran aims to climb up the global cement production ladder, Secretary of Iran’s Cement Industry Employers Association Ali Akbar Alvandian said, Trend reports.
The secretary stressed that the country needs to secure enough electricity and gas supplies for its cement factories in order to reach its target.
Alvandian said that the world produced 4.2 billion tons of cement in 2022, with China, India, and Vietnam being the top three producers.
He added that Iran ranked 8th with 64.2 million tons of cement, down from 6th place in previous years.
The official blamed the drop on the shortage of electricity and gas that affected the country’s cement production for several months last year. However, he also reported that Iran’s cement production increased by 11.6 percent in the first seven months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through October 22, 2023), reaching 42 million tons.
According to Alvandian, Iran has an annual gray cement production capacity of 88 million tons, with 78 factories in operation, and an annual white cement production capacity of 1.6 million tons, with ten plants in operation.
The secretary also pointed out that Iran exported about 13 million tons of cement to Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan, and CIS countries in the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023).
In 2022, China produced 2.1 billion tons of cement, India 370 million tons, and Vietnam 120 million tons.
