New facilities for the manufacturing of technical iodine, bromine and bromine products were proposed to be built in Turkmenistan by Deputy Prime Minister Charymyrat Purchekov at the governmental meeting on Oct.29, Trend reports citing Turkmenportal.
According to Purchekov, the construction is planned as part of the Balkanabat iodine plant in the country’s Balkan region and the Turkmenchemistry State Concern has already received specific proposals from well-known foreign companies with extensive experience in the design and construction of such production facilities.
He said that on the basis of the plant, it’s envisioned to carry out a major reconstruction of existing wells with deposits of iodine and bromine.
In this regard, he proposed to hold a tender with the participation of interested foreign companies.
President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov who also took part in the meeting approved the proposal and instructed the deputy prime minister to continue to study the possibilities of boosting the production of high-quality technical iodine at the largest factories operating in the Balkan region, and also to actively involve foreign companies with extensive experience and technologies in this area.
Turkmenchemistry has two factories - Bereket and Balkanabat, which manufacture iodine-bromine products. Together, these plants produce over 500 tons of technical iodine annually. Most of the products are exported.
Iodine is used in industry in light sources: halogen lamps, metal halide arc lamps, in the production of lithium-ion batteries for cars and a number of other areas.
Turkmenistan is one of the six countries that account for more than 95 percent of the total worldwide iodine production.
