Iran's sponge iron export dries down

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 8. Iran's sponge iron exports decreased by 37 percent in value and 34 percent in weight during the six months of the current Iranian year (from March 20 through September 21, 2024) compared to the same period last year (from March 21 through September 22, 2023).

The data obtained by Trend from the country's Steel Producers Association shows that Iran exported 596,000 tons of sponge iron worth $146 million during the six months.

Nonetheless, Iran exported 903,000 tons of sponge iron valued at $232 million during the same time last year.

Meanwhile, Iran's total exports of steel and iron and related products amounted to 13.9 million tons worth $3.09 billion during the six months. This is 16 percent less in value and 2 percent less in weight compared to the same period last year. In the same period last year, Iran's exports of steel, iron, and related products totaled 14.1 million tons worth $3.76 billion.

To note, Iran's yearly output of sponge iron hits the high notes at over 33 million tons.
