Energy consumption in Iran's housing sector is about 35 percent of the country's total energy consumption, Ahmad Reza Tavakkoli, an official with Iran Energy Efficiency organization (SABA) said.
Further on, Tavakkoli added that the housing sector also consumes some 50 percent of electricity and 40 percent of gas used in the country, Iran's IRNA news agency reported March 9.
The official said that energy consumption in Iran's housing sector is four times as much as in developed countries. He further said that in developed countries, the main part of energy is used in the industry sector.
Tavakkoli said that Iran should move towards using Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS), in order to decrease the waste of energy in the housing sector.
He added that some European companies are offering BEMS services in Iran.
Iran's primary energy consumption reached 4.428 million barrels of oil equivalent per day during the last fiscal year (ended on March 20, 2015).
Without decreasing the energy intensity, the country's energy consumption would reach 2.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent (OE) per annum by 2020 and the continuance of the current pace would leave Iran without any surplus oil and gas to export by 2025, according to the Director of Iranian Fuel Conservation Organization Nosratollah Seifi.
Energy intensity is the ratio between the gross inland consumption of energy (or total energy consumption) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) calculated for a calendar year.
