The turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS terminals in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.904 billion manats in August 2019, which is 25.5 percent more than in the same period of 2018, Trend reports referring to Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).
According to the CBA report, the total number of transactions with payment cards amounted to 13.678 million transactions (an increase of 39.3 percent) for the reporting period. Some 1.488 million transactions worth 164 million manats were carried out outside the country.
The number of transactions with debit cards (both domestically and abroad) amounted to 12.015 million transactions worth 1.77 billion manats, of which almost 5.99 million transactions worth 1.26 billion manats were carried out using ATMs in Azerbaijan, and 1.504 million operations worth 148 million manats via POS terminals.
In August 2019, bank customers carried out 1.663 million transactions worth 134 million manats via credit cards (both domestically and abroad). Moreover, 252,000 operations worth 43 million manats were carried out using ATMs within the country, and 643,000 operations worth 34 million manats were carried out using POS terminals in the country.
Number of payment cards, ATMs and POS terminals
By the end of August 2019, the number of payment cards increased by 15.8 percent (compared to the same period of last year) to 7.209 million cards.
Most of the cards (i.e. 6.438 million cards) consist of debit cards. The number of credit cards for in August amounted to 771,000.
As of Sept. 1, 2019, some 2,588 ATMs were operating in the country, 1,384 of them in Baku and 1,204 in other cities and districts of Azerbaijan.
The number of ATMs has increased by 86 units or 3.4 percent since early 2019.
The number of POS terminals in the country amounted to 64,133, of which 38,447 were installed in Baku and 25,686 in other cities and districts of Azerbaijan.
The number of POS terminals has decreased by 1,977 or 3.1 percent since early 2019.
The volume of transactions in ATMs and POS terminals
In August 2019, 3.9 ATMs and 0.15 POS-terminals accounted for 1,000 people in Azerbaijan.
An average of 2,264.5 operations worth 481,190 manats were carried out per one ATM in August. The volume of one operation per one ATM amounted to 211.4 manats.
There was an average of 33.5 operations worth 2,838.1 manats per one POS terminal in August. The volume of one operation in the POS terminal amounted to 84.8 manats.
