Azerbaijan sees notable build-up in nationwide payment card turnover

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30. In August 2024, Azerbaijan's payment card turnover via ATMs and POS terminals increased by 2.6 billion manat ($1.5 billion), or 32.37 percent, from eight billion manat ($4.7 billion) to 10.7 billion manat ($6.3 billion).

Data obtained by Trend from the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), the total number of payment card transactions amounted to 162.4 million (up by 47.86 percent over the year), including 5.18 million transactions worth 316 million manat ($185.8 million) carried out abroad.

The number of debit card transactions (both inside and outside the country) amounted to 149.39 million for 9.96 billion manat ($5.86 billion), of which 13.66 million transactions worth 3.28 billion manat ($1.93 billion) were made through ATMs inside the country and 47.2 million transactions worth 846 million manat ($497.6 million) were made through POS terminals inside the country.

Bank customers made 13 million transactions through credit cards (both inside and outside the country), totaling 751 million manat ($441.76 million).

In the meantime, POS terminals processed 6.3 billion transactions worth 178 million manat ($104.7 million) and ATMs processed 454,000 transactions worth 121 million manat ($71 million).

To note, as of September 1, 2024, the number of payment cards in Azerbaijan increased by almost 2.9 million, or 18.5 percent, compared to the same period last year and reached 18.56 million against almost 15.67 million a year earlier.
