The emergence of the new Mēris botnet set an absolute record for the speed of DDoS attacks - 21.8 million requests per second in September 2021, Russian Qrator Labs company's Founder and CEO Alexander Lyamin told Trend.
According to Lyamin, last year saw a surge in sophisticated DDoS attacks of L7 Application Layer, which are quite difficult to detect and neutralize because they are organized inside encrypted protocols and can imitate the behavior of legitimate users.
"This was due to the emergence of the new Mēris botnet. The attacks of L7 level have proven to be very effective, especially in areas where companies use encryption protocols that make it difficult to filter such attacks, such as the financial sector," he said. "It was heavily attacked in the autumn of 2021, and hopefully the entire industry has thought and revised approaches to neutralizing distributed attacks on denial of service."
The CEO expressed the hope that in 2022, users will not see new records in terms of attacks on business, and the industry will come into a certain balance.
"However these are only hopes, but, alas, expectations aren’t optimistic. If the business continues to work with a focus on the online component, the intensity of attacks will only grow," he noted.
"Attacks using botnets will continue, and in the short term this trend won’t decline, but will only increase since there are still a lot of unprotected businesses in the industry," added Lyamin.
