New director general of VimpelCom company’s Uzbek subsidiary appointed

Vladimir Petrov has been appointed the director general of Uzbekistan's Unitel mobile operator (Beeline trademark), a message from the company said on Jan.15.

Unitel is a 100-percent subsidiary of Russia's VimpelCom OJSC.

Petrov replaced Alexander Vorobyov who decided to continue his carrier outside the Vimpelcom group.

Prior to this appointment, Petrov headed Vimpelcom Lao Co. which is the Laos division of Vimpelcom company.

In 2007-2008, he headed the Comstar - Ukraine Ltd. owned by Mobile TeleSystems OJSC and has held senior positions in Vimpelcom's divisions in Vietnam and Laos since 2008.

Currently, there are five mobile communication operators in Uzbekistan: Unitel, Coscom (subsidiary of Scandinavian TeliaSonera), Rubicon Wireless Communications JV (RWC, Perfectum Mobile trademark), Uzbektelekom Mobile (UzMobile) and Uzbek-Russian Universal Mobile Systems (UMS) JV.

The market share of the participants for the volume of rendered services till December 2014 was as follows: Beeline - 54 percent, Ucell - 41 percent, those operating under CDMA standard - Rubicon Wireless Communications JV (RWC, Perfectum Mobile trademark) - three percent and Uzbektelekom Mobile, branch of Uzbektelecom JSC - one percent.
