BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 23. European natural gas consumption increased by 2.1% year-on-year in September 2025, reaching 19 billion cubic meters (bcm), the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) says, Trend reports.
According to the report, the growth was largely driven by higher demand in power generation and residential sectors.
Average European temperatures in September were 15.9°C, slightly cooler than September 2024 but 1.23°C above the 1991–2020 average, making it the fifth warmest September on record. While parts of western Europe were marginally cooler than average, Fennoscandia and eastern Europe experienced above-average warmth.
Despite expansions in renewable energy, including a 22% increase in solar and 5% rise in wind generation, the additional output was insufficient to meet rising power demand. Total EU electricity generation climbed 3.6% year-on-year to 198 TWh, with gas-fired power rising 7%, reflecting continued reliance on natural gas to stabilize the grid.
Non-hydro renewables accounted for 40% of total electricity generation, followed by nuclear (25%), gas (16%), hydro (11%), and coal (8%). Meanwhile, industrial gas consumption continued to decline, mirroring a slowdown in activity across major European economies.
