Iran is the fourth largest producer of plums in the world, with an annual production of 430,000 tons, Deputy Director of the Department of Cold and Dry Climate Fruits of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad Mohammad Soleimani told journalists in Savojbolagh County of Alborz Province, Trend reports citing IRNA.
Soleimani said that part of the plums produced in Iran, about 40,000 tons are exported to countries around the Persian Gulf and neighboring countries a year.
The official added that about 80 percent of the plums grown in Iran's Alborz Province belong to the Savojbolagh county. Some of it is unprocessed and some is processed and sold in local and foreign markets.
“There are plum orchards on 1,400 hectares in Savojbolagh county. More than 20 tons of plums are harvested per hectare in this county,” he noted.
There are 1,745 hectares of plum orchards in Iran's Alborz Province.
