Azerbaijan imported tobacco and its industrial substitutes worth over $61.4 million from foreign countries in the past 9 months of 2020, Trend reports referring to the country’s State Customs Committee.

According to the committee, the figure decreased by 30 percent compared to the same period of last year.

The value of Azerbaijan’s export of tobacco and its industrial substitutes from January through September of this year made up $10.6 million, which is a drop by 5.6 percent compared to the same period of 2019.

On August 10, 2017, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev approved the state program on the development of tobacco and tobacco products in Azerbaijan for 2017-2021. One of its main goals is to increase tobacco productivity to 20 centners per hectare, expand the cultivated area of tobacco to 6,000 hectares, and increase production to 12,000 tons of tobacco.

Within the framework of the state program on the development of production of tobacco and tobacco products in Azerbaijan, information about these products from such districts as Yevlakh, Shaki, Gakh, Zagatala, and Balaken was integrated through the Azexport portal into international electronic-trading platforms, including All.biz, Agroserver, Tradekey, and others.
