A meeting of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan in Astana discussed the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country, the press service of the Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom said.
"The head of State, Nursultan Nazarbayev has set important priorities for the nuclear industry. In particular, in 2013, the government of the country issued a mandate calling for the determination of a site for the construction of a nuclear power plant. Very serious work awaits us", the chairman of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan and the Chairman of the Board of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, Vladimir Shkolnik said at an enlarged meeting of the Board of the Nuclear Society of Kazakhstan on Wednesday.
Kazatomprom's Chairman of the Board spoke about the company's work in 2012.
"The whole world has paid great attention to alternative energy sources. Green energy interests our country as well. Last year, we laid the foundation for a complete cycle of solar panels: from the extraction of silicon to the production of finished solar cells," Shkolnik said.
Another issue raised by the president is the creation of local energy systems based on solar and wind, which is a project Kazatomprom already has underway. These systems serve as a modern solution to the problems of agriculture and would provide the long-term autonomous regions of the country with environmentally friendly and uninterrupted power sources.
"The use of such mix-stations will significantly reduce the cost of agricultural production, rendering it more competitive."
The event was also attended by representatives of companies that are part of Kazatomprom, as well as leaders of the Committee for Atomic Energy of the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of Kazakhstan and the Republican State Enterprise "The National Nuclear Center."
