At peak time, electricity consumption will increase by 8,000 megawatts next Iranian year (to start March 21, 2019), Mohammad Reza Haqqifam, deputy head of the Iran Power Generation, Distribution and Transmission Company (Tavanir), said.
If Iran's Energy Ministry fully implements its program on the construction of 5,000 megawatt-power stations, electricity consumption must be reduced by 3,000 megawatts to prevent the power cut, Haqqifam added, Trend reports referring to IRNA.
A decrease in electricity consumption by 3,000 megawatts will save $2 billion, he said.
Haqqifam added that natural disasters in the country have increased.
It is necessary to use new technologies in technical and non-technical areas, he said.
