Iranian electricity network needs new transformers, there are plenty of outdated transformers still used across the country, said Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, Deputy Director of Planning and Economic Affairs at Iran Power Generation - Transmission & Distribution Management Co. (TAVANIR), Trend reports with reference to Tasnim News Agency.
According to Rajabi Mashhadi, transformers are a part of the electricity network’s infrastructure. He added that it is needed to add 7,000 megawatt amperes of new transformers to the country’s electricity network annually.
“There are 40-year old transformers still operating in the Iranian electricity network, making up 17,000 megawatt amperes overall. This amount should be gradually replaced by newer transformers,” he stated.
Rajabi Mashhadi believes that, since there are outdated transformers still in operation, accidents may potentially occur in the network.
“This year (starting from March 21, 2018), 6,000 megawatt amperes of new transformers were manufactured. About a 1,000 more are expected by the end of the year,” he said.
There are about 47,000 megawatt ampere transformers older than 30 years in age, 17,000 of which are older than 40 years in age.
Dr. Rajabi Mashhadi added that the older the transformers get, the more the likelihood of potential accidents rises. Even transformers older than 50 years in age can be found in the country, and their replacement must be considered.
