The production of Iran’s thermal power plants increased by 11 percent from the beginning of current Iranian year (March 20, 2020) to August 5, compared to the same period last Iranian year, said Mohsen Tarztalab, managing director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Energy of Iran.
Tarztalab stressed that Iran's thermal power plants generated 127 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity during the reporting period.
He added that during the same period last Iranian year, thermal power plants generated 114 billion kilowatt hours of electricity.
“The total electricity production of power plants in Iran, including thermal, water, alternative, small-scale and nuclear power plants exceeded 140 billion kilowatt hours during the reporting period,” he said.
The director noted that the units with a capacity of 7,500 megawatts at Iran's thermal power plants can be converted into a combined cycle power plant.
"This plan is on the agenda of the Ministry of Energy of Iran; and when the plan is implemented, 12 billion cubic meters of gas will be saved per year," he said.
Tarztalab emphasized that the implementation of this plan will also increase the efficiency of Iran's thermal power plants by more than 42 percent and prevent the spread of more than 43 million tons of greenhouse gases per year.
According to the director, about 312 billion kilowatt hours of electricity were generated in the last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020).
"About 79 billion kilowatt-hours of it were produced without the use of fossil fuels. Of 79 billion kilowatt-hours electricity, 42 billion kilowatt-hours were produced by converting gas units into a combined cycle power plant, he said.
Tarztalab added that in other words, 11 billion cubic meters of gas was saved in this sector in last Iranian year.
