The global passenger air traffic in 2020 decreased by 65.9 percent being a record for this industry, Trend reports referring to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
According to IATA estimates, the volume of international passenger air traffic, in 2020 on an annualized basis decreased by 75.6 percent, the volume of domestic - by 48.8 percent. At the same time, in December 2020, international traffic decreased by 85.3 percent, and domestic - by 42.9 percent. The overall decline in December made up 69.7 percent.
“The figures for the last month of 2020 confirm stagnation of the recovery in air travels. Passenger traffic fell by 69.7 percent year on year, which is broadly in line with the decline in November and October. In 2020, passenger traffic overall fell 66 percent, which is by far the steepest decline in aviation history," the association said.
The IATA noted that in the regional context - in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, the indicator of passenger air traffic fell by 80.3 percent in 2020.
"Air passenger traffic in Latin America declined 71.8 percent, Europe 73.7 percent, Africa 69.8 percent, North America 75.4 percent and the Middle East 72.9 percent percent ", added the association.
The financial losses of the world's airlines, according to IATA forecasts, will total $157 billion in 2020 and 2021. These figures assume airline losses of $118.5 billion in 2020 and another $38.7 billion by mid-2021.
