BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 22. Turkmenistan and Tajikistan discussed expanding trade and economic ties, as well as transport connectivity and sustainable development, at a conference held in Dushanbe today.
The information was announced by the press service of the Turkmen government following an international scientific and practical conference dedicated to new prospects for Turkmen-Tajik cooperation.
According to the report, the conference brought together experts and officials to discuss cooperation in political, economic, scientific, educational and cultural-humanitarian spheres, as well as the two countries' contribution to stability in Central Asia.
"Particular attention was paid to the development of political dialogue, parliamentary diplomacy, as well as the expansion of trade and economic ties. The sides discussed in detail issues of transport connectivity and sustainable development, which serve as the basis for the common economic prosperity of the region," the report says.
The conference was held as Turkmenistan and Tajikistan mark the 35th anniversary of their state independence in 2026.
The sides also discussed political dialogue and parliamentary diplomacy, alongside issues related to sustainable development and regional cooperation, the press service said.
Notably, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan established diplomatic relations in 1993, while their ties were elevated to a strategic partnership with the signing of the Strategic Partnership Treaty in 2017. In May 2023, the two countries signed a Declaration on Deepening Strategic Partnership during President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s state visit to Tajikistan, along with 24 other cooperation documents.
Trade and economic cooperation has become an important part of the bilateral agenda. Bilateral trade reached $43.1 million in 2025, up 17.1% from the previous year, according to Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry. In 2026, the countries held the 14th meeting of their intergovernmental commission on trade-economic and scientific-technical cooperation and the second meeting of the Turkmen-Tajik Business Council, with discussions covering trade, investment, transport, energy, agriculture, industry and construction.
