BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 10. Transit traffic via rail from Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port in the southern Hormozgan Province has surged by 131 percent in the first two months of the current Iranian year (March 21 - May 21, 2025), compared to the same period last year (March 20 - May 20, 2024), reaching a total of more than 381,000 tons of goods, said the Deputy Director of Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Organization, Ruhollah Shaelya, Trend reports.
Shaelya, speaking to local media, explained that the main cargo transported includes sulfur, chemicals, and oil products.
He emphasized that the successful transit operations highlight the reliability of Shahid Rajaee Port as a key transit route for the region, particularly through the collaboration and investment agreements signed between countries of the Eurasian Economic Union and both public and private sectors.
The Shahid Rajaee Port, with a vast area of nearly 4,800 hectares, is capable of handling over 88 million tons of cargo annually.
On April 26, a powerful explosion occurred at one of the container terminals in the Iranian port of Shahid Rajaee. Official figures show that 57 people were killed and more than 1,200 were injured during the incident.
