Saeed Kouti, NISOC (National Iranian South Oil Company) deputy chief for production affairs, said the country is collecting 39 million cubic meters of flaring gas per day in its oil-rich areas in south.
The government is cooperating with the private sector to progress ahead with projects aimed at saving flaring gas in the Persian Gulf, Kouti told Young Journalist Club (YJC) on June 2.
Currently, 39 million cubic meters of gas is being saved now and stored at the Maroun petrochemical plant at the Imam Khomeini Port in Khuzestan province, he added.
A 2015 World Bank report said Iran flared some 10.5 billion cubic meters of gas a year, putting it behind Russia and Iraq as the third largest flaring country in the world. Its satellite data in 2017 showed an increase in flaring of more than 4 billion cubic meters compared to the previous year.
Noting that the projects are underway using domestically-manufactured equipment, Kouti said the projects will have economic benefits as the government will export the gas later.
NISOC will put out to tender projects related to stopping flaring gas in 23 more areas in south of Iran, he said, adding that 130 million cubic meters of flaring gas will be collected when projects fully implemented.
Oil producing countries often burn or flare a certain amount of natural gas that accompanies crude oil to the surface which is too small to be recovered or pipelined to a processing facility. The phenomenon, however, emits hazardous air pollutants during the flaring of the associated gas.
