BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 14. A total of 41,300 tons of tea leaves worth 9.97 trillion rials (about $17.5 million) were purchased from farmers in the Gilan and Mazandaran Provinces of Iran with a guarantee from April 21 through May 12, 2025, the Head of Iran's Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz told reporters, Trend reports.
He said that 75 percent of the tea leaves purchased during the mentioned period went to tea processing factories, and 25 percent went to the state.
Jahansaz explained that 39,000 tons of the purchased tea leaves were first-grade and 2,300 tons were second-grade, while 9,300 tons of dry tea were produced from the purchased tea leaves.
"In the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2025, through March 20, 2026), 140,000 tons of tea leaves are expected to be purchased in the Gilan and Mazandaran provinces," he mentioned.
The official also said that the area of tea plantations in the country is approximately 22,000 hectares.
Jahansaz added that in the last Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025), loans worth 260 billion rials (approximately $456,000) were provided to farmers and tea processing factories in Iran. As a result of the loans, relevant work was carried out on 1,500 hectares of plantations, and 700 pieces of agricultural machinery were purchased.
To note, in the last Iranian year, 29,000 tons of dry tea worth 25 trillion rials (approximately $43 million) were produced in Iran from tea leaves taken from an area of 22,000 hectares.
