BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 26. Azerbaijan churned out 4,400 tons of waste in 2024, marking a 6.8 percent uptick from the previous year, and of that mountain of refuse, 69.3 percent was solid household waste, while the remaining 30.7 percent was a mixed bag of waste stemming from the production activities of various enterprises.
Data obtained by Trend from the State Statistical Committee indicates that 80.5 percent of the 3,025 tons of solid household waste generated last year was transported to landfills for disposal, 19.2 percent was used for energy generation, and 0.3 percent was sold domestically.
The utilization of domestic refuse culminated in the generation of 232.5 million kWh of electrical energy, reflecting an increment of 4.3 percent compared to the preceding year, 2023.
In industry and other sectors of the economy, including waste generated in previous years, 22.2 percent of production waste was used as raw materials in enterprises, 15.3 percent was sold domestically, 1.4 percent was exported, 11.6 percent was transported to landfills for disposal, and 49.5 percent remained in enterprises.
As a result of industrial activities, 260,200 tons of hazardous waste were generated in 2024, accounting for six percent of the total waste amount. Of these, 71.9 percent were generated in mining and extraction industries, the majority of which were from enterprises located in Baku., A total of 115,700 tons of hazardous waste, including waste from previous years, was fully disposed of last year.
