BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 4. Romania’s foreign exchange reserves held by the National Bank of Romania (NBR) dropped sharply in May, falling to 55.66 billion euros as of May 31, 2025, down from 62.41 billion euros at the end of April, Trend reports citing the bank.
According to an NBR statement, the decline reflects monthly outflows of 12.58 billion euros, driven by adjustments in the minimum foreign currency reserves held by commercial banks, payments on public debt, disbursements from European Commission accounts, and other transactions.
Meanwhile, inflows totaled 5.83 billion euros, stemming from reserve adjustments, Ministry of Finance account funding, and various other sources.
The country’s gold reserves remained unchanged at 103.6 tons, with an estimated value of 9.7 billion euros based on current international prices.
Consequently, Romania’s total international reserves, which include both foreign exchange and gold, fell to 65.36 billion euros at the end of May, compared to 72 billion euros one month earlier.
Looking ahead, the NBR noted that payments due in June 2025 on public debt denominated in foreign currency, either directly or guaranteed by the Ministry of Finance, are expected to total approximately 87 million euros.
