Transport corridors witness surge in Azerbaijani freight traffic

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 13. The volume of cargo transportation along Azerbaijan's transport corridors reached 16.407 million tons from January to June this year, with a cargo turnover of 6.633 billion ton-kilometers, representing a 0.2 percent increase in volume and a 2.4 percent increase in turnover compared to the same period last year, Trend reports.

According to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, the breakdown of cargo along various transport corridors is as follows: East-West corridor: 8.17 million tons; Europe-Caucasus-Asia corridor: 4.242 million tons; North-South corridor: 4.807 million tons; North-West corridor: 3.248 million tons; South-West corridor: 181,100 tons.

Cargo transport modes were distributed as follows: Rail transport: 7.506 million tons (45.8 percent of the total); road transport: 5.004 million tons (30.5 percent); sea transport: 3.896 million tons (23.7 percent).

Transit cargo pulled its weight, clocking in at a whopping 9.707 million tons, which accounted for a solid 59.2 percent of the total transportation volume.
