Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are expanding transboundary water cooperation through Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex project, Trend reports referring to Turkmen State news agency.
According to the information, the second phase of the 'Regional Nexus Dialogue Program for Central Asia (2020 - 2023)' envisages a small-scale pilot project - Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex, implemented jointly by Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The project is aimed at finding technical and investment opportunities to solve the problem of intensive siltation of the channel reservoir at the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex, which is of great importance for the countries of the lower reaches of the Amu Darya River.
It is noted that the hydroelectric complex provides drinking water and electricity to the neighboring regions of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, seasonal regulation of the volume of water to supply the necessary resources to farms that grow wheat, cotton, melons and other crops, as well as fish.
According to the experts, the demonstration project will further strengthen and expand transboundary water cooperation between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Innovative bottom sediment treatment and disposal solutions are expected to reduce costs for the agricultural sector in both countries and benefit local communities.
