Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan have signed a road map for cooperation on Lapis-Lazuli Transit, Trade & Transport Route or Lapis Lazuli Corridor, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The signing took place on January 16, 2021 during a trilateral online meeting of the heads of the interdepartmental group of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.
During the meeting, the parties noted the effectiveness of cooperation in this format and reviewed the results of cooperation over the past period. The sides exchanged views on joint activities for the current year, the report says.
Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in charge of the transport and communication sector Bayramgeldi Ovezov, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev and the Acting Chairman of the Central Bank of Afghanistan Ajmal Ahmadi participated to the meeting.
The agreement on transit and transport cooperation Lapis Lazuli between Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and Turkmenistan was signed on November 15, 2017, at the ministerial meeting of the 7th Regional Economic Cooperation Conference on Afghanistan in Ashgabat.
According to the Lapis Lazuli project, railways and highways should connect the Afghan Turgundi city of Herat province with Ashgabat, then with the Caspian Turkmenbashi port. The corridor will be extended to Baku, then through Tbilisi to Ankara with links to Poti and Batumi cities, then from Ankara to Istanbul.
