France, Strasburg, Dec.16 / Trend , corr. A.Maharramli /France stopped the Georgian-Ossetin war in the Caucasus, being the chairmanship in the EU, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said delivering a speech at the session of the European Parliament, dedicated to the results of the France's chairmanship in EU.
"When the Georgian crisis took place in August, we had only one idea -to stop the war," the President said.
The Caucasus crisis demonstrated that Europe retained united.
"In August, we discussed the ceasefire and agreement on withdrawal of troops on Sept.12, and therefore, we managed to escape war. On Aug.8, Russian troops stood 40km far from Tbilisi. Now almost the whole Russian troops have been withdrawn from the territory excerpt the territory of South Ossetia and Abkhazia," Sarkozy said.
Large-scale military operations commenced in the unrecognized South Ossetia republic in the early morning of 8 August. Georgian Army was reported to enter Tskhinvali on 9 August. Later Russian troops occupied the city and pressed back Georgian militaries to the territory of Georgia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on Aug. 26, and set diplomatic relations with them on Sept.9.
