ASTANA, Kazakhstan, June 27. Kazakh national oil and gas company KazMunayGas (KMG) has launched the first stage of a pilot project for green hydrogen production at its KMG Engineering facility in Atyrau, Trend reports, citing KazMunayGas.
According to KMG, the project is being implemented in cooperation with Kazakhstani renewable energy company Green Spark. It marks a significant step in Kazakhstan’s transition to clean energy, with hydrogen produced using electricity generated from renewable sources—in this case, solar energy. The only by-product of the process is water, making it one of the most environmentally sustainable methods of fuel production.
In the initial phase of the project, 336 photovoltaic modules with a total capacity of 200 kW have been installed at the company’s laboratory building. This capacity allows for significant energy savings—estimated at $23,092.50 annually—by reducing dependence on externally purchased electricity.
The next stage involves the installation of an electrolyzer, a device that will use solar-generated electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting green hydrogen will be used for heating and partial electricity supply of the laboratory building, creating a closed production cycle on-site.
The project serves as a scientific and demonstration platform for testing hydrogen energy solutions under real-world conditions in western Kazakhstan. KMG noted that the initiative is part of the company’s broader Low-Carbon Development Program, which outlines a roadmap for decarbonization through 2060.
