The cooling system at a third Japanese nuclear power plant that was reportedly failing remains functional, reported the Kyodo news agency early Monday, citing fire department sources.

Alarms had been raised at the Tokai nuclear power plant earlier Monday due to a reported malfunction in the cooling system, dpa reported.

But Kyodo reported later that only one of two pumps operating the cooling system had failed and that the second pump was still keeping the Tokai plant's nuclear core safe. Japan Atomic Power said there had been no disturbances to the cooling process.

The plant is 120 kilometres north-east of Tokyo and had shut down automatically during Friday's massive earthquake. Two other nuclear power plants further north in Japan continue to suffer problems, raising fears across the country.
