Cargo traffic decreases in Azerbaijan

Some 202.6 million tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan’s transportation sector in January-November 2016, that is, 0.5 percent less than in the same period of 2015, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report Dec. 19.

Non-oil cargo traffic increased by 2.5 percent and amounted to 151.3 million tons for the year.

According to the report, around 82.1 percent of the total cargo transported in January-November 2016 accounted for private sector.

Some 63.9 percent of the total cargo was transported by vehicles, 26.6 percent – by pipelines, 6.9 percent – by trains, 2.5 percent – by ships, and 0.1 percent – by planes.

Around 1.75 billion passengers were transported in January-November 2016, that is, 2 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Some 88.5 percent of passengers were transported by vehicles, 11.3 percent by subway, the rest part – by other types of transport.

Some 14 million tons of cargo were transported by trains in January-November 2016, which is 10.6 percent less than in January-November 2015, the report said.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 440, while the number of unloaded railcars was 420.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 18,000 tons, western – 5,000 tons, southern – 1,700 tons.

Some 5.16 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-November 2016, or 16.8 percent less than in the same period of 2015. Around 42.1 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargo.

The volume of cargo handled at the Azerbaijani ports was 8.26 million tons in January-November 2016.

According to the report, around 129.4 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles in January-November 2016, which exceeds the same period of 2015 by 2.8 percent.

Around 1.55 billion people were transported by vehicles in January-November 2016 (an increase by 2.5 percent as compared to January-November 2015), 96.1 percent of these passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent by vehicles.

Passenger transportation by metro was 197.2 million people in January-November 2016, that is, 2.4 percent less than in January-November 2015.

Moreover, some 1.84 million passengers were transported by planes in January-November 2016, or 7.9 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Some 0.2 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the reporting period, the report said.
