As much as $5 billion will be invested in the expansion of Iran’s rail transport infrastructure over the next four years, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Saeed Mohammadzadeh said.
He was speaking at the 22nd meeting of the UIC (International Union of Railways) Regional Assembly for the Middle-East (RAME) in Isfahan, IRNA reported.
He said that more than $2.1 billion has been invested in the road transport infrastructure of Iran over the past four years.
He noted that last year, fuel savings in Iran’s rail transport amounted to $250 million.
Regarding foreign trade, he said that in 2017, the EU exported products worth 11 billion euros to Iran, and Iran exported products worth 10 billion euros to Europe.
“Iran has a special position because it has large water and land borders, several special trade zones in the Persian Gulf and is located in the main transit corridor,” he said.
He noted that the railways of the region should be managed under the slogan “one network, one management.”
He offered to organize a joint railway company with member countries of the UIC Assembly.
