Libyan Military Council head resigns

The head of the Libyan Military Council Abdelhakim Belhadj resigned yesterday, Islamweb agency reported.

According to the agency, Belhadj explained his intention to resign because he plans to run for the National Congress (Libyan parliament). According to Belhadj, it is time in Libya to move from military to civilian rule.

Parliamentary elections in Libya scheduled for June19 will be the first national elections in this country in the last 45 years. During Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's reign elections were not held in the country.

Some 200 MPs will be elected to the Libyan parliament, 80 of which will represent different parties, and the remaining 120 seats will account for independent MPs.

According to Libyan election committee, so far, the country has registered more than 1.5 million voters. The total number of persons entitled to vote is about 3.4 million with population of six million people.
