( dpa ) - A contingent of 742 officers and sailors of the Taiwanese Navy launched Wednesday a "good will visit" to Nicaragua, part of a tour of Latin America.
Nicaraguan authorities said three Taiwanese ships arrived late Tuesday in the western Nicaraguan port of Puerto Corinto, where they were met by Army chief General Omar Halleslevens, Mayor Ernesto Mendez and Taiwanese Ambassador Wu Chin-Mu.
Nicaraguan Army Spokesman General Adolfo Zepeda said the Taiwanese fleet is to visit several countries in Central America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, with a view to building closer relationships as well as training its officers.
