The railway infrastructure of Turkey will be privatized, the Transport, Maritime and Communication Minister of Turkey Lutfi Elvan said, the Kanal7 TV channel reported Oct. 23.
Elvan said it is expected that the privatization of the railway infrastructure will start in Turkey next year.
The railway infrastructure of Turkey needs to be privatized in order to overcome its technological backwardness.
The minister said that Turkey has reconstructed over 90 percent of its railways.
The Turkish Republic State Railways (TCDD) was founded in 1927. The total length of railways in Turkey is 8,600 kilometers.
Turkey plans to bring the total length of railways in the country up to 25,000 kilometers by 2023.
