Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will attend meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) foreign ministers to be held in Damascus on May 23 to 25, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Elkhan Polukhov said.
The 36th meeting of the foreign ministers, which will be presided over by OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, will focus on the Middle East problems, Arab-Israel conflict and conflict situation on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization of Islamic countries.
The OIC was founded on Sept. 25, 1969 at the Conference of heads of Muslim states in Rabat to ensure Islamic solidarity in the social, economic and political spheres, the struggle against colonialism, neocolonialism, and racism and to support the Palestine Liberation Organization. Status of observer is held by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Central African Republic, Russia as well as the National Liberation Front of the Philippines and the Moro, a number of organizations (UN, NAM, etc.). Headquarters is in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). Currently, the OIC brings together 57 countries with a population of about 1.2 billion people.
Azerbaijan was admitted to the OIC in 1992.
