DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, July 25. Tajikistan needs approximately 1,000 railcars and several locomotives, **to update the railway stock, the Minister of Transport Azim Ibrohim said at a press conference, Trend reports.

"Tajikistan purchased 27 railcars from Russia in 2024. Of course, we want to continue," he added, emphasizing that further acquisitions would depend on the country's financial capabilities.

Earlier this month, the minister noted that many locomotives, freight, and passenger cars in the country need to be replaced due to the expiration of their service life.

A major focus for the ministry was reported to be the design and reconstruction of 573 kilometers of highways and 71 kilometers of railroads as part of a phased complete overhaul and repair project.

The total length of railways is approximately 980 kilometers, with international passenger connections established with Russia and Uzbekistan. According to the minister, $7.5 billion is needed to update the country's railway stock.
