Iranian power plants will replace mazut and diesel with natural gas, said Saeed Motesaddi, Deputy Director of Iran's Environment Protection Organization.
The Oil Ministry and the Energy Ministry have agreed to supply power plants with natural gas instead of mazut and diesel throughout the year, Iran's Shana news agency quoted Motesaddi as saying on June 28.
Domestic power plants need 160 million cubic meters of natural gas, which will be provided by the end of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 2016), he said, adding that 80 million cubic meters of natural gas was supplied to power plants in the past Iranian fiscal year(ended on March 21) instead of 110 million cubic meters of mazut.
Currently, Tehran and Isfahan power plants are being supplied fully with natural gas, while Arak, Montazer Qaem, and Tous power plants in Khorasan Province are using both mazut and natural gas.
This year, only power plants will use mazut which have no alternative fuel to burn, Motesaddi noted.
Therefore, mazut will account for less than 10 percent of fuel input in power plants, he said.
Motesaddi said on June 7 that the policy of reducing air pollution in big cities requires us to replace mazut with other fuels.
In the past Iranian fiscal year, Iranian power plants consumed 10281 million liters of mazut, 9231 million liters of diesel fuel, and 48978 million cubic meters of natural gas.
