Iran boosts its power generation potential

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 24. The country's potential to produce electricity has increased by 8,000 megawatts during the term of the current Iranian government (the current Iranian government has been in power since August 2021), Iranian Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said at the Cabinet meeting in Tehran on July 24, Trend reports.

According to Mehrabian, whereas at the time of the beginning of the current government, the power generation capacity amounted to 85,000 megawatts, this figure has now exceeded 93,000 megawatts. In other words, if the country produced 287 billion kWh of electricity per year when the government started its tenure, the figure now stands at 332 billion kWh.

The Iranian minister emphasized that more than 20,000 megawatts of power plants are currently under construction in the country, 8,500 of which will be thermal power plants. The construction of these plants is currently 50 percent complete.

To note, Iran's electricity production potential is 93,024 megawatts. The production potential of the country's thermal power plants is 75,767 megawatts, the production potential of hydroelectric power plants is 12,144 megawatts, the production potential of retail power plants is 2,485 megawatts, the production potential of renewable power plants is 1,141 megawatts, the production potential of the Bushehr nuclear power plant is 1,020 megawatts, and the production potential of diesel units is 408 megawatts.
