New French President Francois Hollande arrived in Afghanistan Friday on an unannounced visit, government sources in Kabul said, DPA reported.
Hollande was expected to hold talks with his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai, and take part in a press conference.
Hollande's plan to withdraw French combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of this year has caused irritation in the NATO military alliance.
NATO intends to withdraw combat forces in 2014, leaving the Afghan armed forces and police responsible for security.
