By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Serbia hopes to receive gas via the Southern Gas Corridor, according to the country’s minister of mining and energy Aleksandar Antic.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez on the sidelines of opening ceremony of TANAP-Europe connection, Trend reports citing Serbian Ministry of Mining and Energy.

Antic said that TANAP’s opening is extremely important for the whole region as it enables diversification of gas supply.

“New gas sources will make our entire region more energy-efficient and stable. It also enables additional gas supply through all these gas pipelines and LNG terminals in the region,” said Antic.

He said that this certainly represents a good chance for Serbia as well, considering that two interconnection projects are currently under development.

It is the interconnector Greece - Bulgaria (IGB) and Bulgaria - Serbia interconnection, he said, adding that these two interconnections will connect Serbia to the Southern Gas Corridor.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

The launching ceremony of the first stage of the Southern Gas Corridor was held in Baku on May 29, 2018, while opening ceremony of TANAP’s Phase 0 was held on June 12, 2018 in the Turkish city of Eskisehir. The opening ceremony of the TANAP-Europe connection was held on Nov. 30, 2019 in Ipsala, Edirne province of Turkey.

Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) were connected on the Turkish-Greek border. It is planned to open the Phase 1 of TANAP on Nov.30.
